Iphone Music Downloads – Three Ways To Get Them For Free

Buying iphone music can quickly blow our budgets. As a music lover I was finding the cost a real barrier to my passion for expanding my music library. So I did some research and found there are basically three ways we can get music for free (or nearly for free!)

1) Search the internet for sites that have free music. This can be a lot of fun because many of these sites provide musicians with a way to get “discovered” by us. So we can be among the first to find a new talent!

Sites like sounclick have a good selection of artists that provide free music. The music is provided under “creative commons license” – which just means that the musician is willing to let you download their music for free – and even, in some cases, let you remix or make other changes to it. One way to get a unique ring tone perhaps (how to do that is covered on my squidoo lens – the link to it is at the bottom of this article)

You will also need a good iPhone converter. I recommend you go to sites like as they do guarantee that they have checked the software for spyware and viruses. They also often have free software of software you can try for free. There are iPhone converters reviewed there.

2) Hunt around the internet for sites (other than Apple) that sell iPhone music on a per song basis (these can be hard to find, but Napster is planning to provide music for iPhone users later this year, so keep checking them out).

Obviously, there is iTunes! But, at around $1 a song, it does not take long to have spent your budget (you DO have a budget right? – because it is real easy to overspend when you pay out only $1 at a time -believe me I have been there!) One of the problems with iTunes is the limits on sharing and even playing the music on other devices.

3) Use subscription sites where you pay a fee and then can download an almost infinite selection of music.

There are a range of sites that offer different subscription options. We recommend the pay-once-to-join option as this works out to be the cheapest membership option (and also works out cheaper than buying one piece of music at a time).

(Musicstation is not available for US users but is an example of a pay as you go membership site and at $6US (3UK pounds) a week the costs soon mount up and by the end of 12 months we are looking at 52×6= $322 (156UK pounds) – so don’t be sucked in by the slick look of sites like this!)

If you download as much music as I do – I currently have a library of 386 songs/instrumentals – then it does not take long before the subscription option becomes the best option. On subscription, downloading all these songs only cost 13cents each. And the more music is downloaded, the cheaper each one costs!

But, be warned – downloading iPhone music can be addictive!

Free iPod Music Downloads Sites – Do They Exist?

Yes, is the short answer. However the word free conjures up all sorts of interpretations which includes something that you don’t have to pay for and is as good as the paid article – which we all know is rarely the case!

Music downloads that are free are easy to find all you have to do is go to your favourite search engine and type in ‘free music download sites’ and you will find over 33 million web pages with reference to that search term. With that number of websites you could spend a lifetime and possibly still not find what you want.

You might think that with 33 million pages it would be a breeze to find a free download site – but you are sadly mistaken. The reason for this is that at least 99% of those pages are rubbish. I know this is a harsh term to use but there are a lot of dangers in downloading from some of these sites, which I will go into a little later.

Some of you reading this article will already be aware of what I am going to talk about so please be patient as there are others who will need to know what pitfalls are out there.

The ‘free music download site’ providers do so by providing files over a file sharing network, commonly known as P2P (peer to peer). The way this simply works is to think of multiple users online at the same time uploading and downloading and ‘you’ tap into that ‘file flow’ – I have tried to keep this simple but it can get more complicated! Hopefully you get the picture now.

As you can imagine there are limitations to this – you can only access what is being ‘shared’ at that moment so you may get free music but not the songs you want!

The most important consideration here though is the motive for these site operators or file sharers. Many are benign but most are not. Many contributors to a network may be budding musicians looking for an audience and perhaps that elusive break to stardom, many are just sharing music they love but unfortunately many contributors have ulterior motives. Unfortunately many of these people use these portals to infect your computer with viruses and spyware – it can be a bit of ‘sport’ for them! (So don’t become a willing victim!)

The last thing I will point out about many of these P2P sites is the quality sucks. If you’ve ever used them you will find broken links (songs that only partly download), download speed is often very slow, you may not find the tunes you are looking for and worst of all you may end up getting a virus or Trojan – need I say more!

There are however, some sites that do provide a relatively safe environment to get free downloads these include Kazaa and Limewire – they are good sites but offer a limited choice (more current songs than older songs) and download speeds are slow.

If you’re getting a bit dejected here there is a ‘half way house solution”. This comes in the form of unlimited download sites that are specifically tailored for iPods.

I’m mentioning this because while they are not free, usually no more than $40 for a lifetime membership they provide incredibly good value.

If you are wondering what they are let me briefly explain. An iPod music downloads site is effectively a membership to a database where you can download music from. The music (and music videos, games and even TV shows) are sourced from the P2P networks that I mentioned earlier but the ‘major difference’ is that these guys have sourced the files from ‘clean’ sites where the quality is excellent, there are no broken links, no viruses and huge choice simply because the files have been put into a ‘database’ – so it’s a ‘win-win’ situation. You’re effectively getting free music after paying for a membership.

Download Free MP3 Ringtones

MP3 ringtones are one of the most popular ringtone format available now in the mobile industry. MP3 ringtones is a part of a real music or actual song, they use original pieces of the music along with lyrics, exactly as the original recording. The appeal of MP3 ringtones, to teenagers in particular, is that they act as a fashion statement, it also reflect the user’s personality.

And, with the quality of sound a lot better than the older type of ringtones this new format is bound to change the mobile world. The success of MP3 Ringtones and other real music tones give record labels and operators another source of revenue, and probably a big one at that.

This new type of ringtone has helped the Music Industry in terms of the royalties being paid by the Mobile Operators in each ringtone download. In 2005, ringtones pulled in $600 million in sales, 20% ahead of estimates and more than double the 2004 take. The year’s leader, 50 Cent’s Candy Shop, sold 1.9 million downloads, more than the top-selling digital song: Gwen Stefani’s Hollaback Girl, with 1.2 million.

Although you have to pay to get MP3 ringtones, we can still find ways to download them 100% free. There are websites that will let you download free MP3 ringtones, you can either download them directly to your cell phone or download the ringtone to your computer and then upload it through a USB data cable or infra red connection.

If your cell phone is web-enabled or internet capable you can download free mp3 ringtones from WAP sites. But, before you do this I suggest that you first search for a WAP site through you computer and read the instruction on how to download their free MP3 ringtones.

Another unconventional way to download free mp3 ringtones is through mobile forums, there are some members in the forum who are kind enough to give out free ringtones. They most likely have collected a number ringtones from the internet or maybe they made it themselves. You too can make your own free mp3 ringtones, through the help of softwares called “ringtone maker”. You can download this software through a link provided below.
